I Classification and Structural Characteristics

Yeasts belong to the fungal kingdom and are primarily unicellular organisms, although some species can form multicellular structures or pseudohyphae. They are classified mainly within the phyla Ascomycota and Basidiomycota.

Cells are typically oval or spherical, with diameters ranging from 3–10 μm. As eukaryotic organisms, yeasts possess a well-defined nucleus, mitochondria, vacuoles, and a cell membrane rich in ergosterol.

The cell wall is composed primarily of glucans and mannans, providing structural integrity and protection.

II Reproduction and Growth

Yeasts reproduce mainly through asexual budding, although some species divide by fission. Sexual reproduction varies by classification, with Ascomycota producing ascospores and Basidiomycota forming basidiospores.

They are facultative anaerobes, capable of both aerobic respiration and anaerobic fermentation, allowing adaptation to diverse environments.

III Metabolism and Applications

Under aerobic conditions, yeasts generate energy efficiently through respiration, producing up to 36–38 ATP per glucose molecule. Under anaerobic conditions, they perform fermentation, producing ethanol and carbon dioxide.

Yeasts are widely used in food and industrial processes, including brewing, baking, and bioethanol production. They also produce valuable metabolites such as glycerol, citric acid, B vitamins, and enzymes.

In biotechnology, species such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris are used for recombinant protein production, including vaccines and therapeutic proteins.

IV Clinical Significance and Diagnosis

Certain yeast species, particularly Candida spp. and Cryptococcus spp., are opportunistic pathogens that can cause superficial and invasive infections.

Pathogenic mechanisms include adhesion to host tissues, biofilm formation, morphological switching, and immune evasion through structures such as capsules and melanin.

Diagnostic methods include direct microscopy (e.g., KOH preparation, India ink staining), culture on selective media such as Sabouraud agar or CHROMagar, and advanced identification techniques such as MALDI-TOF MS.

Molecular detection using PCR provides rapid and accurate identification, especially in invasive infections or mixed microbial environments.

V Prevention and Control

Preventive strategies focus on maintaining host immunity and minimizing risk factors such as prolonged antibiotic use and invasive medical procedures.

Proper hygiene, environmental sanitation, and careful monitoring of immunocompromised individuals are essential to reduce infection risk.

In industrial and laboratory settings, controlled cultivation and contamination prevention are critical to ensuring product quality and safety.
