Not every lab needs a full-size freezer farm. For startups, teaching labs, clinics, satellite sites, and PIs carving out their first cold storage, a small lab freezer is often the smartest purchase of the year — if you match the temperature class, format, and capacity to what you actually store. Step 1: Pick your temperature class (this decides everything)

-20°C (standard lab freezer). Enzymes with glycerol, primers, some antibodies, buffers. Cheapest class, but many reagents degrade over months here.

Undercounter (50–150L). Tucks below the bench. Good for shared bays with limited floor space.

Step 3: Size it honestly

Count your boxes. A standard 2-inch cryo box holds 81 vials; 25L of usable ULT space holds roughly a few dozen boxes depending on geometry. Rule of thumb: buy 30% more capacity than your current inventory — but no more. Oversized ULT freezers waste electricity ($1–3/day at -80°C) and bench space.

Step 4: Check the details that actually matter

  • Adjustable setpoint (e.g., -60°C to -86°C) so one unit covers multiple protocols
  • Digital display + high/low temperature alarms — non-negotiable for anything irreplaceable
  • Sensor-fault alarm, so a dead probe doesn't silently become a dead freezer
  • Compressor brand (SECOP and other name-brand compressors are a good sign at any price point)
  • Insulation and gaskets: dual door gaskets and thick foam keep temperature stable and power draw down
  • Noise if it lives in the lab: ≤55 dBA is comfortable conversation level
  • CFC-free refrigerant for institutional sustainability requirements

Big-brand benchtop ULT units typically run $4,000–$7,000.
