Sku: TQBB025

Synonym(s): 1,4-Piperazinediethanesulfonic acid, Piperazine-1,4-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid), Piperazine-N,N′-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid)

Description

In biological experiments, it is an important pH stabilizing reagent. Typically, a suitable weak acid is mixed with its conjugate base to obtain the appropriate pH value. Most biological reactions occur under neutral conditions, generally with a pH between 6 and 8, so the effective buffering range of the buffer is also required to be between 6 and 8. In addition, it is required that the acidic and basic forms of the buffer do not chelate with certain metal ions.

Features

  • High-Purity Biochemical Grade (≥99%)

Ensures reliable and reproducible performance in sensitive biological and biochemical experiments, with minimal impurities such as low residue after ignition (≤0.3%) and extremely low insoluble substances (≤0.005%).

  • Optimal Buffering Capacity at Near-Neutral pH

With a pKa of 6.7–6.9 at 20 °C, PIPES provides excellent buffering capacity in the pH range of approximately 6.1–7.5, ideal for physiological and near-neutral pH systems.

  • Zwitterionic and Non-Chelating

Exhibits minimal interaction with divalent metal ions such as Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺, making it suitable for studies where metal ion stability is crucial and preventing interference in biochemical reactions.

  • Chemically Stable and Low UV Absorbance

Offers high stability across common laboratory conditions and low absorbance in UV ranges, making it compatible with spectrophotometric assays and reactions sensitive to background interference.

  • Versatile and Easy to Prepare

Readily dissolves in water (especially as sodium salts), enabling fast preparation of buffer solutions for various laboratory workflows including high-precision assays.

Applications

  • Cell Culture and Cell-Based Assays

Maintains stable pH in mammalian or microbial culture systems, supporting cellular health and metabolic stability.

  • Enzyme Kinetics and Biochemical Reactions

Ideal for enzymatic assays requiring strict pH control and minimal interaction with metal ions, ensuring accurate activity measurements.

  • Protein Purification and Chromatography

Suitable for protein isolation workflows and chromatographic methods where stable pH and low metal binding are essential to preserve protein structure and activity.

  • Electrophoresis and Isoelectric Focusing

Used in buffer systems for protein or nucleic acid electrophoresis, providing consistent conductivity and pH stability for high-quality band resolution.

  • Microscopy and Histology

Often used in fixation buffers for electron microscopy, fluorescence imaging, and tissue processing, helping preserve fine cellular structures and reduce artifacts.

  • Structural Biology and Protein Crystallization

Supports crystallization trials and structural studies due to its chemical stability and low interference with biomolecular interactions.
