Description
Conventional PCR testing runs through three separate steps — extraction, reaction setup and amplification — each with its own instrument, hands-on time and contamination risk. For labs that need results quickly, or that do not have dedicated PCR rooms, that workflow is the bottleneck.
The AutoPlex-12 combines magnetic bead nucleic acid extraction, real-time PCR amplification and 4-channel fluorescence detection in one closed instrument. Load the sample and pre-dispensed reagent strips, start the run, and get results in as little as 30 minutes. It processes 1–12 samples per run, with multiplex detection of up to 16 targets per sample. Runs are set up and results viewed on the built-in touchscreen, so no separate PC is needed.
The platform is open: it works with a wide range of fluorescent quantitative PCR reagent systems in both liquid and lyophilized formats. A sealing design using solid paraffin closes each reaction during amplification to reduce aerosol contamination.
How It Works
- Load — add samples and pre-dispensed reagent strips; fit disposable magnetic rod covers.
- Extract — the magnetic rod collects, transfers, incubates and elutes magnetic beads between reagent wells, without moving liquid between tubes.
- Amplify — eluted nucleic acid is amplified in standard 200 µL PCR tubes on a Peltier thermal module, sealed with paraffin.
- Detect — four LED excitation channels and a silicon photomultiplier read fluorescence in real time.
Why AutoPlex-12?
Integrated extraction-plus-PCR instruments generally fall into two groups: open systems that run your own reagents but take one to two hours per run, and closed cartridge systems that are fast but lock you into a proprietary assay menu. The AutoPlex-12 is designed to give you both speed and reagent freedom, in a stand-alone unit with its own touchscreen.
| AutoPlex-12 | Typical open all-in-one systems | Typical closed cartridge systems | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to result | As little as 30 min | About 1–2 hours | Fast, assay-dependent |
| Reagents | Open: your own or third-party qPCR reagents, liquid or lyophilized | Open | Proprietary cartridges only |
| Samples per run | 1–12, flexible batch size | Varies by model | Usually 1 per module |
| Multiplexing | Up to 16 targets per sample | Assay-dependent | Fixed by cartridge panel |
| External computer | Not required — built-in touchscreen | Often requires a connected PC | Varies by model |
| Running cost | Reagent strips and standard PCR tubes | Kit-dependent | Per-test cartridge pricing |
Comparison based on publicly available specifications for representative systems in each category; individual products vary.
Need portable single-sample testing? The AutoPlex-Mini runs the same sample-to-result workflow on one sample at a time in a 6.5 kg portable unit.

FAQ
What does "sample-in, result-out" mean?
You load the raw sample and reagent strips; the instrument performs nucleic acid extraction, PCR setup, amplification and fluorescence detection automatically, without manual pipetting between steps.
How long does a run take?
As little as 30 minutes from sample to result. Actual run time depends on the assay's extraction and cycling program.
Do I need a separate computer to run it?
No. The instrument has a built-in touchscreen for setting up runs and viewing results. Data can be exported via USB.
How is it different from other all-in-one PCR systems?
Many open all-in-one systems take about 1–2 hours per run, while cartridge-based systems are fast but limited to proprietary assays. The AutoPlex-12 combines a run time as short as 30 minutes with an open reagent platform and a built-in touchscreen.
Is there a portable single-sample version?
Yes. The AutoPlex-Mini uses the same sample-to-result approach and open reagent platform, runs one sample at a time and weighs 6.5 kg.
How many samples and targets can it run?
1–12 samples per run, with up to 16 targets per sample across 4 fluorescence channels.
Can I use my own qPCR reagents?
Yes. It is an open platform compatible with fluorescent quantitative PCR reagent systems in liquid or lyophilized form. Assays may need to be adapted to the reagent strip format; our team can help with assay transfer.
Are reagent kits included?
No. Reagent kits are selected according to your targets and sample type. Please contact us to discuss compatible kits.
Which fluorescent dyes can it detect?
It has 4 channels covering 455–650 nm excitation and 510–750 nm emission, suitable for common qPCR dyes such as FAM, HEX/VIC, ROX and Cy5. Contact us to confirm a specific dye set.
How is contamination controlled?
Extraction and amplification run in a closed system with disposable magnetic rod covers, and each reaction is sealed with solid paraffin during amplification to reduce aerosol carryover.
Does it need a dedicated PCR lab?
Because the workflow is closed and automated, it can be placed in a biosafety cabinet or clean bench. Follow your institution's biosafety requirements for the samples you test.
What are the power requirements? Can it be used outside the US?
The standard configuration is AC 110 V, 60 Hz, 800 VA. The power supply can be customized to the voltage, frequency and plug type of other countries; please specify your region when ordering.
Is installation and training available?
Please contact us to arrange installation, training and service support for your site.
Is a user manual available?
Yes. Please contact contact@biofargo.com to request the AutoPlex-12 user manual.
When can I expect my order to ship?
Most orders are filled and shipped within 2-3 business days from the time they are received.
Our standard shipping usually take 2-5 days.
We also provide express shippping for time-sensitive deliveries.
