Description
Primary epithelial cells can be difficult to establish and expand because limited attachment, slow spreading, early senescence and loss of epithelial characteristics may reduce experimental consistency. A general-purpose basal medium may not provide the tissue-adapted nutrients and growth support required by sensitive primary epithelial cell cultures.
XR Epithelial Cell Growth Medium Kit is a low-serum primary epithelial cell culture medium developed for epithelial cells derived from respiratory, ocular, renal, mammary, prostate and other tissues. Its optimized basal formulation supports cell attachment and spreading, while the selected epithelial growth supplement provides balanced nutritional support for cell survival and proliferation.
The complete culture system contains recombinant human epidermal growth factor and transferrin together with 2% v/v fetal bovine serum. This low-serum formulation is designed to reduce excessive serum exposure while providing the growth support needed to help delay primary epithelial cell senescence and maintain epithelial phenotype and key cellular functions.
Two tissue-oriented supplement options are available. EpiGM-B is intended for retinal pigment epithelial cell culture, while EpiGM-M supports a broader range of primary epithelial cell types, including bronchial, alveolar, mammary, corneal, conjunctival, renal, renal proximal tubule, sebaceous gland and prostate epithelial cells.
Important: XR Epithelial Cell Growth Medium is a low-serum medium containing 2% v/v fetal bovine serum. It is not a serum-free epithelial cell culture medium.

For experiments that do not require the entire kit at one time, aliquot the supplement and prepare the medium using the following ratio:
| EpiGM Supplement | 4 mL |
| Epi Basal Medium | 96 mL |
| Final Volume | 100 mL |
Store the prepared complete medium at 2–8°C and use within four weeks.
Optional Antibiotic Addition
The product does not contain antibiotics or antifungal agents. When required by the experimental protocol, an antibiotic solution may be added at 0.5–1% of the final culture volume.
Recommended Culture Conditions
| Culture Stage | Recommended Seeding Density | Medium Change | Recommended Passage Point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid Cell Growth | 10,000–15,000 cells/cm² | Change medium every other day | 70–80% confluence |
| Routine Passage | 5,000–8,000 cells/cm² | Change medium every other day | 70–80% confluence |
The optimal seeding density may vary according to cell source, donor, passage number, culture vessel, coating system and experimental objective. Researchers should confirm the appropriate conditions for their specific primary epithelial cell model.

Why Choose XR Epithelial Cell Growth Medium Kit?
Successful primary epithelial cell culture requires more than basic nutrient supplementation. Cells isolated from tissues may attach inefficiently, expand slowly or undergo early senescence when culture conditions are not adapted to epithelial cell requirements.
XR Epithelial Cell Growth Medium Kit combines an optimized basal medium with selected epithelial supplements, recombinant human epidermal growth factor, transferrin and a controlled 2% serum concentration. This formulation is designed to provide sufficient growth support without relying on a conventional high-serum culture system.
The availability of separate EpiGM-B and EpiGM-M supplements allows researchers to select a culture configuration according to the epithelial cell source. This makes the system suitable for retinal pigment epithelial cells as well as respiratory, ocular surface, renal, mammary, prostate and sebaceous gland-derived epithelial cells.
