Synonym(s): N-[Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]-3-aminopropanesulfonic acid

Description

TAPS is a biological buffer (zwitterionic) designed by Good, et al., and typically referred to as Good’s buffer useful in cell culture media formulations. Selection of biological buffer systems should include the following criteria: exclusion by biological membranes, low absorption between 240 and 700nm, chemically stable, and stable to temperature and concentration changes. Biological buffer with a useful pH range of 7.7–9.1. pKa=8.4 at 25°C.

Features

  • High-Purity, Biochemical Grade: ≥ 99.0% purity ensures minimal contaminants, heavy metals ≤ 5 ppm, and moisture ≤ 1.0%.

  • Excellent Buffering Stability: pKₐ ≈ 8.4 (25 °C), stable in pH range 7.7–9.1, suitable for mildly alkaline biological systems.

  • Optically Clear in Solution: Low UV absorbance at 260 nm and 280 nm minimizes interference in nucleic-acid and protein assays.

  • Water-Soluble & Chemically Stable: Dissolves to a colorless, transparent solution; stable across temperature and concentration changes.

  • Versatile Biochemical Applications: Ideal for cell culture, electrophoresis, chromatography, enzyme assays, and other pH-sensitive procedures.

Applications

  • Cell Culture Media: Maintains stable pH for cell growth and metabolic studies under weakly alkaline conditions.

  • Electrophoresis: Serves as running buffer for DNA/RNA separations, protein gels, and nucleic-acid analyses.

  • Chromatography: Useful in mobile phases or elution buffers for protein purification and pH-dependent separations.

  • Enzyme Assays & Biochemical Reactions: Provides stable pH for alkaline-preferring enzymes and pH-sensitive assays.

  • Protein Workflows & Structural Studies: Suitable for protein purification, crystallization buffers, and biochemical assays requiring minimal metal chelation and optical clarity.
