Description
Oncostatin M (OSM), a multifunctional cytokine belonging to the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family, is primarily secreted by activated immune cells such as T cells, monocytes, and macrophages. It plays diverse and important roles in cell culture systems and has garnered significant attention in stem cell research, tissue engineering, and disease modeling. Under specific conditions, OSM can inhibit the differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), thereby helping to maintain their pluripotency. Conversely, OSM can also promote differentiation in certain contexts. For example, when used in combination with hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), it induces the differentiation of hepatic progenitor cells into functional hepatocytes. Additionally, OSM stimulates the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells while suppressing adipogenesis.
