Description
Noggin, a secreted protein belonging to the TGF-β superfamily, functions as an endogenous antagonist of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and plays a key regulatory role in embryonic development, particularly in neural patterning and bone formation. By inhibiting BMP signaling—especially that of BMP4, which normally suppresses neural differentiation—Noggin promotes the differentiation of stem cells (such as embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells) into neural precursor cells or neurons. It is therefore commonly used in neural differentiation media for stem cells. Under certain culture conditions, Noggin can also act synergistically with other factors (e.g., FGF2, TGF-β) to help maintain stem cell self-renewal and prevent spontaneous differentiation. Additionally, Noggin is frequently employed in cerebral or neural organoid culture systems to facilitate the formation of neuroepithelial structures.
