Description

EPO (Erythropoietin), also known as erythrocyte-stimulating factor, is an endogenous glycoprotein hormone composed of 165 amino acids. During the fetal period, EPO is primarily produced in the liver, while after birth its synthesis occurs mainly in the kidneys. Additionally, the liver, brain, reproductive system, bone marrow macrophages, and mammary glands also have the capacity to produce EPO autonomously. Its synthesis is regulated by hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), among other mechanisms. As an important cytokine in humans, the most well-known and essential biological function of EPO is to stimulate erythrocyte proliferation and promote hematopoiesis. Beyond its role in blood formation, EPO also exhibits other effects, such as inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, protecting cells from apoptosis, and promoting angiogenesis in both normal and tumor tissues.
