Description
Nicotinamide (NAM) belongs to vitamin B family and is the amide form of vitamin B3. NAM is present in food and is a constituent of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). Tryptophan is the precursor for NAM synthesis in liver.[1] NAM controls cell metabolism, redox reactions, mitochondrial functionsand energy generation. It promotes natural killer cells proliferation and survival.[2] NAM confers neuroprotection and promotes neuronal maturation. It has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and may provide protection in ischaemic stroke and traumatic brain injury. NAM may elicit therapeutic benefits in Alzheimer′s, Parkinson′s, and Huntington′s diseases.
