Description

Mycoplasma contamination not only involves places that directly contact cells such as cell culture plates, culture reagents, or ultra-clean benches but also equipment such as water trays and water baths in cell culture incubators that may cause mycoplasma contamination. In addition to providing scavenging agents that directly remove mycoplasma agents, normal cells are also provided with mycoplasma preventive agents to prevent mycoplasma contamination. It mainly includes the following aspects: reagent prevention (directly added to the cell culture medium), ultra-clean bench prevention (spray), water bath prevention (directly added to the water bath), and cell incubator water tray prevention.

It is primarily composed of cationic peptide antibiotics, specifically designed to eliminate bacteria, fungi, mycoplasma, and other microorganisms in water baths. Its mechanism of action involves physically breaking down the cell walls of microorganisms and inhibiting the synthesis of enzymes required for their reproduction, ultimately leading to microbial death. As a result, this product does not induce antibiotic resistance. Multiple independent validation tests have shown that this product effectively clears various types of bacteria, fungi, mycoplasma, and other microorganisms. It is especially effective in inhibiting airborne bacteria, fungi, spores, and spore-forming bacteria for up to 7–10 days. It is provided as a 500× concentrated solution and can be added directly to the water bath at the recommended dilution.

Instructions for Use

  1. Put on a lab coat and latex gloves.
  2. Drain and clean the water bath following the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Refill with distilled or deionized water to the normal operating level.
  4. Add MycGuard™-2 at a 1:500 dilution — 2 mL of concentrate per 1 L of water.
  5. Stir gently to distribute, then resume normal operation.
  6. Replace the treated water every 7–10 days, or per your incubator manufacturer's schedule if it is more frequent.

    What is MycGuard™-2 used for?

    It controls bacteria, fungi, and mycoplasma in the water of open laboratory water baths, so the bath does not become a source of contamination for the vessels and samples warmed in it.

    How much do I add?

    Dilute 1:500 — 2 mL of concentrate per 1 L of bath water. One 100 mL bottle treats up to 50 L.

    Can I use MycGuard™-2 in the water pan of a CO₂ incubator?

    No. Use MycGuard™-1 Solution (100×), which is formulated for CO₂ incubator water pans and used at a different dilution. MycGuard™-2 is intended for open laboratory water baths.

    Can it be added to cell culture media?

    No. MycGuard™-2 is for bath water only and must not contact cells, media, or buffers.

    Will repeated use lead to resistant strains?

    The cationic antimicrobial peptides act by physically disrupting the microbial cell wall rather than inhibiting a specific metabolic target, so there is no selective pressure of the kind that drives conventional antibiotic resistance.

    Why are the treatment interval and degradation period both 7–10 days?

    They describe the same treatment cycle from two perspectives. A single dose supports contamination control for 7–10 days. During that period, the active peptides gradually degrade and antimicrobial activity tapers off, so the bath should be re-dosed every 7–10 days or whenever the water is changed.

    Will it clear an existing contamination in my cultures?

    No. It is an environmental preventive measure for the bath itself, not a treatment for contaminated cultures.

    How should it be stored, and what is the shelf life?

    Will it corrode my water bath?
