Synonym(s): 2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1,3,4-Thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol, 1,3,4-Thiadiazole-2,5-dithion, Bismuthiol, 2,5-Disulfanyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole
Description
CG 617, DMTD, is a heterocyclic chemical. It is also an aromatic chemical. The ring structure contains one sulfur atom and two nitrogen atoms. DMTD, its inorganic salts, and its derivatives, are widely used as corrosion inhibitors and metal deactivators, mainly for copper and its alloys, in many industries, such as lubricants and greases. DMTD can also be used as a chemical intermediate to synthesize many products with significant applications.

Applications
The applications of CG 617, DMTD, include, but are not limited to,
-
Chemical Intermediate for multiple industries.
-
Corrosion inhibitor for copper and brass.
-
Rust preventative.
-
Antioxidant.
-
Used in water treatment, antifreeze fluids, lubricants, and greases.
Manufacturing Process
CG 617, DMTD, is typically produced by reacting hydrazine hydrate with carbon disulfide in the presence of sodium hydroxide to first afford the sodium salt of DMTD, followed by a neutralization step with an acid, such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The substance produced then is filtered to give the desired product.
Chemical Reactions
CG 617, DMTD, reacts with inorganic bases, such as sodium hydroxide, to form the salt of DMTD. DMTD also reacts with ammonia to form the ammonium salt of DMTD.
DMTD reacts with alkyl mercaptans, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, to produce the DMTD derivatives. These derivatives are typically used as corrosion inhibitors in lubricants and greases. Comparing to DMTD, the derivatives have better solubility in oils.
