Synonym(s): Hexanedioic acid, Hexane-1,6-dioic acid, 1,4-butane dicarboxylic acid
Description
CG 212, Adipic acid also known as hexanedioic acid, is one of the highest volume dicarboxylic acid in the chemical market. It is a key raw material for the production of nylon. Adipic acid is also used to make various diester chemicals, which can be used as base oils in lubricants. Other applications of adipic acid include the production of polyurethane and plasticizers. Adipic acid is very soluble in polar organic solvents, such as methanol and ethanol, but it is not soluble in non-polar organic solvents, such as hexane.

Applications
CG 212, Adipic acid, is useful for a variety of applications, which include, but are not limited to,
-
Chemical intermediate
-
Precursor for food ingredients
-
Raw material for lubricant base oils
-
Monomer for production of nylon
-
Monomer for production of polyurethane

Raw material for production of plasticizers
CG 212, Adipic acid, is widely used in many industries, which include, but are not limited to, Food, plastics, lubricants, rubber. and pharmaceuticals, etc.
Manufacturing Process
Adipic acid is manufactured by oxidizing cyclohexanol, using nitric acid as the oxidant, via a multiple step process. Cyclohexanone is an intermediate in the production. Glutaric acid and succinic acid are two common by-products.
Adipic acid is also produced by oxidation of cyclohexene with hydrogen peroxide.
An alternative process to make adipic acid is carbonylation of butadiene with carbon oxide.
Chemical Reactions
Adipic acid can react with inorganic bases to form adipate salts.
Adipic acid can react with organic amines to form ammonium adipates.
Adipic acid reacts with alcohols to form esters via an esterification reaction. By adjusting the molar ratio of the adipic acid to the alcohol, the end product can be mono- or di- esters.
Adipic acid reacts with diamines, such as hexamethylene diamine, to undergo a polymerization reaction.
