Description

CG 105, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol is a colorless transparent liquid at ambient with a characteristic odor. It is a branched chiral alcohol. It is one of the highest-volume alcohols worldwide. 2-Ethylhexyl alcohol is a precursor of production of many other chemicals, which are widely used as plasticizers, emollients, solvents, and base oils. 2-Ethylhexyl alcohol itself can be used as an organic solvent, a cetane improver and a chemical intermediate for multiple industries. It is slightly soluble in water, but is miscible with many organic solvents, such as ethanol and tetrahydrofuran.

2-Ethylhexyl alcohol, is typically manufactured from 2-ethylhexanal via a hydrogenation reaction.

Chemical Reactions

Like most organic alcohols, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol reacts with carboxylic acids, carboxylic anhydrides, and acyl halides to form esters, such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, a widely used plasticizer.

2-Ethylhexyl alcohol can be oxidized into 2-ethylhexanal.
