Description
CNTF (Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor) is a neurotrophic factor structurally similar to IL-6 and LIF, featuring a characteristic four-helix bundle topology. It was initially identified based on its ability to support neuronal survival, particularly in the ciliary ganglion. CNTF promotes the survival of various types of neurons, including sympathetic, sensory, motor, and hippocampal neurons. It also induces the proliferation and differentiation of astrocytes and stimulates the secretion of other neurotrophic factors. Furthermore, when used in combination with EGF/bFGF, CNTF can induce the differentiation of neural stem cells into neurons or glial cells.
