Description

TGF-β3 (Transforming Growth Factor-β3) is a pleiotropic cytokine within the TGF-β superfamily that plays important roles in embryonic development, tissue repair, immune regulation, and cell differentiation. Unlike TGF-β1, which is pro-fibrotic, TGF-β3 exhibits unique functions in wound healing and embryonic development—particularly a stronger anti-scarring capacity. Similar to TGF-β1, TGF-β3 can inhibit the proliferation of many epithelial cells and promote epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which is significant in cancer research and developmental models. In stem cell culture, TGF-β3—often used in combination with BMP—induces the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into chondrocytes, making it valuable for cartilage tissue engineering.
