Synonym(s): Decane-1,10-dioic acid, 1,8-Octanedicarboxylic acid, Octanedicarboxylic acid, Sebacylic acid, decanedioic acid.

Description

Sebacic acid also known as decanedioic acid or octanedicarboxylic acid, is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid. It is mainly manufactured from ricinoleic acid, which is obtained from castor oil. It is a white solid at ambient. It is an important raw material and chemical intermediate widely used in the production of nylon, plasticizers, and surfactants. Sebacic acid also has a variety of applications in lubricants, cosmetics, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.

Applications

CG 217, Sebacic acid, is useful for a variety of applications, which include, but are not limited to,

  • Chemical intermediate

  • Raw material to make nylons, including Nylon 1010, Nylon 610, Nylon 810, etc.

  • Raw materials to make plasticizers, such as dioctyl sebacate.

  • Raw material to make solvents.

  • Raw material to make lubricant additives and synthetic ester base oils.

CG 217, Sebacic acid, is widely used in many industries, which include, but are not limited to, Plastics and rubber, lubricants, cosmetics, textiles, and pharmaceuticals, etc.

Manufacturing Process

In the typical manufacturing process to produce Sebacic acid, castor oil is used as raw material. Hydrolysis of castor oil under basic conditions gives ricinoleic acid as an intermediate in the production. At a high temperature, ricinoleic is cleaved to produce Sebacic acid as the final product, with 2-octanol as the by-product.

Chemical Reactions

Sebacic acid can react with inorganic bases to form Sebacate salts.

Sebacic acid can react with organic amines to form ammonium Sebacates.

Sebacic acid reacts with alcohols to form esters via an esterification reaction. By adjusting the molar ratio of the adipic acid to the alcohol, the end product can be mono- or di- esters.

Sebacic acid reacts with diamines, such as hexamethylene diamine, to undergo a polymerization reaction.
