Description
IL-1α (Interleukin-1α), a key member of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) family, shares a similar β-trefoil topology with other IL-1 family members such as IL-1β, despite low sequence homology. Like IL-1β, it exerts its biological functions by binding to the interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R). IL-1α is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays a central role in inflammation, immune responses, and cell proliferation.In in vitro cell culture, IL-1α stimulates monocytes/macrophages and dendritic cells to secrete other cytokines, thereby mimicking an inflammatory environment. It also promotes the proliferation of fibroblasts and endothelial cells, making it a useful tool in wound healing and angiogenesis research.
