Description
BMP-2 (Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2), a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily, is synthesized in vivo as a precursor protein. Through proteolytic cleavage that removes the signal peptide and propeptide, it yields a mature peptide consisting of 114 amino acid residues. This mature peptide further forms homodimers or heterodimers via dimerization, thereby acquiring full biological activity. BMP-2 stimulates DNA synthesis and cell replication, promoting the directed differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts. As a key factor inducing bone and cartilage formation in vivo, BMP-2 is expressed during limb growth, endochondral ossification, early fracture healing, and cartilage repair, playing a critical role in embryonic skeletal development and regenerative repair.
