Description

Biofargo Cytochrome C is a small heme protein loosely associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is a soluble hemoprotein—unlike other cytochromes—and serves as an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain.

Cytochrome C functions by transferring electrons between Complex III (cytochrome bc₁ complex) and Complex IV (cytochrome c oxidase) during oxidative phosphorylation, enabling efficient ATP generation. It undergoes reversible oxidation and reduction cycles but does not bind oxygen directly.

In addition to its metabolic role, Cytochrome C plays a central part in the apoptosis signaling cascade. Upon mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization, it is released into the cytosol, where it triggers caspase activation and programmed cell death—making it a widely used marker in apoptosis research.
