Description

Benzotriazole is a heterocyclic chemical. It is a fused ring structure with a benzene ring fused to a triazole ring, with both rings being aromatic. Benzotriazole, its inorganic salts, and its derivatives, are widely used as corrosion inhibitors, mainly for copper and its alloys, in many industries, such as water treatment and lubricants. Benzotriazole can also be used as a chemical intermediate to synthesize many products with significant applications, such as the synthesis of acylbenzotriazole and its derivatives.

Manufacturing Process

Benzotriazole is typically produced with 1,2-phenylenediamine as the major raw material. A ring-closure reaction is achieved via a diazotization, using sodium nitrite as the reagent.

Chemical Reactions

Benzotriazole reacts with inorganic bases, such as sodium hydroxide, to form the salt of benzotriazole.

Benzotriazole reacts with bis (2-ethylhexyl) amine and formaldehyde to form the liquid derivative of benzotriazole, which is widely used as a corrosion inhibitor in lubricants and greases, due to its excellent compatibility and solubility in those systems.
