Description
CG 530, Tributyl phosphate, also known as TBP, is a colorless and odorless transparent liquid at ambient. It is slightly soluble in water, but is miscible with most organic solvents, such as toluene. It is used as an extracting agent for rare earth metals. In some cases, TBP is used as a plasticizer. It is also used as a defoaming agent in dyes, coatings, petroleum drilling and paper industries.

Manufacturing Process
Tributyl phosphate, TBP, is typically manufactured by reacting n-butanol with phosphoryl trichloride. Hydrochloride, a strong inorganic acid, is a side product in the production.
Chemical Reactions
Tributyl phosphate is hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid or base catalyst. The products resulted from the hydrolysis of tributyl phosphate are phosphoric acid and butanol.
Tributyl phosphate reacts with concentrated nitric acid to form a TBP-HNO3 adduct.
