Description

Oleylamine (CG314) is a high-volume fatty amine widely used in various industries.

Pure oleylamine is a colorless liquid, while the industrial-grade product typically ranges in color from light yellow to yellow due to the presence of impurities. These impurities primarily consist of other long-chain fatty amines with different chain lengths.

Nanomaterial Synthesis

Oleylamine is one of the most widely used reagents in colloidal nanocrystal synthesis, where it can act as a capping ligand, high-boiling solvent and mild reducing agent. CG314 Oleylamine 95% is stocked in our US warehouse in 700 g increments (700 g, 1.4 kg, 2.1 kg and 2.8 kg) for research labs.

Metal nanoparticles – shape- and size-controlled synthesis of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and alloy nanoparticles
Magnetic and metal oxide nanoparticles – thermal decomposition routes to monodisperse iron oxide and other oxide nanocrystals
Quantum dots – ligand and co-solvent in hot-injection synthesis of semiconductor quantum dots such as CdSe and PbS
Perovskite nanocrystals – used together with oleic acid as the ligand pair in the synthesis of lead halide perovskite (CsPbX₃) nanocrystals
Surface modification – ligand exchange and surface passivation of nanoparticles and thin films

Industrial Applications

Oleylamine is also used as an intermediate in the production of surfactants and as an additive in emulsifiers. Major industrial applications include:

Lubricant additives
Mineral flotation agents
Waterproofing softeners for fibers
Dyeing auxiliaries
Anti-static agents
Pigment dispersants
Anti-caking agents for fertilizers
Anti-rust agents

Manufacturing Process

Industrial oleylamine is produced through a multi-step chemical process. Oleic acid is typically used as the starting material and is first converted into a nitrile intermediate. This intermediate then undergoes high-pressure hydrogenation, which reduces it to the desired oleylamine.

The final product is further refined by distillation and filtration to ensure quality and consistency.

Chemical Reactions

It reacts with organic carboxylic acids (e.g., oleic acid) to form organic ammonium salts. These salts can be converted into the corresponding amides by the elimination of water under high temperatures or in the presence of suitable catalysts.
Oleylamine also forms ammonium phosphate salts with acidic phosphate esters, such as mono- and di-phosphate esters. These salts are widely used as anti-wear and anti-rust agents in the lubricant industry.
With inorganic acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid), oleylamine forms the corresponding ammonium salts.
Reaction with acyl halides (e.g., acetyl chloride) produces oleylamide derivatives, such as acetic oleylamide.

FAQ

What is CG314 Oleylamine 95% used for?

CG314 Oleylamine 95% is commonly used as a fatty amine intermediate in surfactants, lubricant additives, mineral flotation agents, pigment dispersants, anti-static agents, anti-rust agents, dyeing auxiliaries, fiber softeners, and fertilizer anti-caking formulations. Its long-chain structure and primary amine functionality make it useful in applications that require surface activity, hydrophobicity, dispersion, or metal surface protection.

Can CG314 Oleylamine be used for nanoparticle, quantum dot or perovskite synthesis?

Yes. Oleylamine is a standard reagent in colloidal synthesis of metal, metal oxide, semiconductor quantum dot and lead halide perovskite nanocrystals, where it serves as a capping ligand, solvent and mild reducing agent. CG314 has a primary amine content of at least 95% (typical 99.0%) and low water content (typical 0.1%). Because nanocrystal growth can be sensitive to amine purity and moisture, we recommend reviewing the lot CoA, and many labs degas or dry oleylamine under vacuum before use.

Where does CG314 Oleylamine ship from?

CG314 Oleylamine is stocked in our US warehouse in 700 g, 1.4 kg, 2.1 kg and 2.8 kg packs and ships domestically. University and government purchase orders are accepted. Bulk and drum quantities are available on request.

Is CG314 Oleylamine the same as CAS 112-90-3?

Yes. CG314 is an industrial-grade oleylamine product with CAS number 112-90-3. Oleylamine is also known as (Z)-octadec-9-enylamine. The product has the chemical formula C₁₈H₃₇N and is classified as a long-chain primary fatty amine.

What is the typical appearance of CG314 Oleylamine?

CG314 Oleylamine is typically supplied as a light yellow liquid at 25 °C. Depending on storage temperature, it may appear as a paste or semi-solid and then melt into a liquid when warmed. This behavior is related to its freezing or melting range and does not necessarily indicate a quality issue.

Why can industrial-grade oleylamine appear yellow instead of colorless?

Pure oleylamine is generally colorless, but industrial-grade oleylamine may range from light yellow to yellow. This is usually caused by minor impurities, mainly other long-chain fatty amines with different carbon chain lengths. For most industrial applications, color should be evaluated together with amine value, iodine value, water content, and primary amine content.

What specifications should buyers check before purchasing Oleylamine 95%?

Buyers usually review the primary amine content, total amine value, iodine value, water content, appearance, and freezing point. For CG314 Oleylamine 95%, the primary amine content is specified at 95% minimum, with low water content and a typical light yellow liquid appearance. A Certificate of Analysis can help confirm the actual batch results before shipment or use.

Is CG314 Oleylamine soluble in water?

Oleylamine is generally insoluble in water but soluble in many organic solvents. Because it contains a long hydrophobic carbon chain and a reactive amine group, it is often selected for oil-based systems, organic formulations, dispersions, and surface modification applications.

How should CG314 Oleylamine be stored?

CG314 Oleylamine should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area with the container tightly closed. Direct sunlight should be avoided. Ambient temperature is preferred for long-term storage, and the recommended handling temperature should not exceed 60 °C.

What safety precautions are required when handling Oleylamine?

Oleylamine should be handled with appropriate protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, and face protection. Avoid breathing vapors, mist, or aerosols, and use the product only in a well-ventilated area. Because oleylamine is corrosive and hazardous to aquatic life, spills should be contained and the material should not be released into drains or the environment.

What packaging is available for CG314 Oleylamine?

CG314 Oleylamine is commonly supplied in metal drums. Other packaging options may be available upon request, depending on order quantity, destination, and customer handling requirements. Buyers should confirm the exact package size before ordering.

Can CG314 Oleylamine be used in lubricant additive formulations?

Yes. Oleylamine is used in lubricant-related applications, especially where anti-rust, anti-wear, dispersing, or surface-active performance is needed. It can react with acidic phosphate esters or organic acids to form amine salts that are useful in lubricant additive systems.
